In 2014, Paula Ezcurra received her B.S. in Aquatic Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. While there, she worked both in science outreach for K-12 schools, and well as for various research labs, gaining experience in information management, scientific SCUBA diving, and kelp forest ecology. Paula conducted an independent research project as part of her undergraduate honors thesis to determine the carbon sequestration potential of mangrove forests in Baja California, Mexico. She continued this work upon graduating, eventually publishing the results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
In 2016, Paula continued her studies as part of the Scripps Climate Science and Policy Master of Advanced Studies Program. For her Capstone Project she wrote a portion of the Puerto Rico Climate Change Council’s updated report for their Third Working Group: Society and Economy. After graduating, she continued to work on this topic, publishing her sea-level rise research in the Journal of Cultural Heritage.
Also at Scripps, Paula has previously worked as a researcher and science communications associate for the Aburto Lab. She also served as a project coordinator to the California Collaborative for Climate Change Solutions and for Dr. Ram Ramanathan—where her work involved supporting the Climate Education for All educational initiative, which aims to bring climate education to adults across America in locally relevant terms through engagement with community leaders.
Born in Mexico City, and raised in San Diego, Paula is now working at the non-profit organization, the Climate Science Alliance. There, she has worn various hats, all in furtherance of the preservation of natural resources in the face of a changing climate across the Californias. When not at work, Paula continues her science communications efforts by introducing the natural world to her two young children, Isabel and Daniel.
